This is both embarrassing and a little worrying. It’s been a while since the province of Limpopo was declared bankrupt and placed under national administration, but now there isn’t even food in the hospitals. Which, when you’re dealing with very sick people, is probably not a good thing.
Patients are being given tea and biscuits instead of food, and doctors are no longer being fed either. Patients are receiving porridge with some meat during the day, but the supply of fruit and vegetables has been cut short as suppliers stopped delivering.
The stoppage of service delivery is due to non-payment of accounts, which is due to the province’s bankruptcy. There are rumours that the non-delivery of services may be due to political reasons. The South African Medical Association has said that it will be taking legal action against the suppliers.
This hurts the already tarnished reputation of government healthcare in Limpopo, where a nurse was recently stabbed while on duty.
All a little bit worrying if you ask me. I’d like to see the PR spin the ANC is going to put on this one.
