Sorry Trevor, not anymore.
We all know who Alan Knott-Craig Jnr is. He’s the guy who bought MXit, owns World of Avatar, and made it possible for you to buy Vida with your cell. His father, Alan Knott-Craig Snr, has just been appointed as the CEO of Cell C. This could mean some very interesting developments in the telecoms industry.
The decision was announced by the Cell C board earlier today. Knott-Craig will join Cell C as of 1 April 2012, replacing former CEO, Lars Reichelt. Reichelt resigned in 2010. Simon Duffy, the interim CEO of the company for the last six months had the following to say about Knott-Craig’s appointment:
Alan is one of the most capable and experienced leaders in the industry and I am confident that his appointment will significantly enhance Cell C’s ability to provide an excellent service to its customers and to compete even more effectively for their business. Cell C has carved out a strong position as an innovative alternative in the industry and, having made considerable progress over the past few years, is strategically well-positioned for growth.
What is going to be interesting to watch is to see if there will be any integration from Cell C’s side with the current offerings from World of Avatar and MXit. Asked for comment on his appointment, Knott-Craig stated that telecoms was a “a highly innovative and disruptive industry” and that he was excited to raise Cell C to the level of the current dominant players, Vodacom and MTN.
