A game farmer has been mauled to death by a buffalo on his Free State farm. Willie Cronje farmed in Boshoff and was also a qualified doctor. The incident was witnessed by his 18-year-old son.
Cronje and his vet were in the process of sedating two buffalo on his farm in order to run some blood tests on the animals. One of the buffalo reportedly woke up unexpectedly within the game enclosure and viciously charged at Cronje as he tried to close the boma gate to contain it.
In addition to his farming operation, Cronje had also owned a medical practice near Pretoria. He died on the scene of the attack, in front of his teeenage son, Willem.
This sad event is a vivid reminder that in additon to being some of our country’s greatest natural treasures, our wild animals are incredibly dangerous. Perhaps none moreso than a wounded buffalo.
