As regular readers will recall, yesterday famous BASE jumper Jeb Corliss attempted a second flight off of Table Mountain which ended in tragedy. Recently obtained amateur footage shows how he appears to have clipped a ridge, which sent him into a mid-air tumble and left him with two broken legs. Click through for the video.
The video sees Corliss jumping in a black wing-suit, followed closely by cameraman and fellow BASE jumper, Jeff Nebelkopf in a blue wing-suit. The amateur footage has already received over 50 000 hits on YouTube in just over 12 hours.
It is still unclear exactly what caused the error, although fellow BASE jumper Joby Ogwyn, who had already jumped when Corliss took to the air, believes it may have been strange gust of wind that caused Corliss’ error. Corliss may also be facing a fine for jumping without a permit, although no official mention has been made of this yet.
All things considered, Corliss is very fortunate to have escaped with injuries to his leg and knee.
