A UK judge ruled this week that Richard O’Dwyer, an English university student, can be extradited to the United States to face charges of copyright infringement – O’Dwyer being the former administrator of TVShack, a website that linked to pirated content. This sets a dangerous legal precedent for anybody who does anything fun on the internet.
TVShack was taken down following the 23-year-old’s arrest last year.
Linking to copyrighted material isn’t against the law in Britain; it is in the United States, however, and even though O’Dwyer has never been there, his Westminister judge has ruled that he could face prosecution in the US, and up to five years of jail time.
So we’re clear: this would set a precedent for the trying of non-US citizens for crime committed outside of the country.
Yay liberty.
And of course if SOPA passes, this gets even more ridiculous.
