Not everything went according to plan at the ANC’s centenary celebrations over the weekend. Dictator, and Ugandan President, Yuweri Museveni, had to get his security guards to buy him some grilled chicken from Nando’s because there was no food at his accommodation.
Yoweri Museveni, who has been in charge of Uganda since 1986, and just missed out in appearing in the Nando’s “Last dictator standing” commercial because his predecessor, Idi Amin, took his spot, wasn’t the only dignitary left distressed at his treatment while attending the celebrations.
Presidents Bingu wa Mutharika from Malawi, Obiang Mbasogo from Equatorial Guinea, Hifikepunye Pohamba from Namibia and Paul Kagame from Rwanda, were amongst those that didn’t have such a good time at their rented Woodlands Hills Wildlife Estate accommodation.
Their minions had to go and buy their own bedding, food, pots, pans, glasses and bottled water because the ANC had the owners of the houses remove all their possessions.
Alcohol was however provided.
Mampho Mmelaedi, who looked after the house Museveni was staying, said:
Ugandan officials had to leave Woodlands to go and buy duvets, food and other necessities for the president as there was a bed without linen.
Valentine Rantsoareng, joint owner of the Rantsoareng hotel group, didn’t agree with the allegations about the accommodation, but insisted the heads of state had “rather asked for chicken”, as opposed to what was on the menu.
“I think people who make these allegations are somewhat dissatisfied because they haven’t been paid yet, but I have only now received the receipt for it,” Rantsoareng continued.
This doesn’t appear to be the case though, as Motladi Metsing, pointed out:
Namibian officials went to buy food, pots, plates and glasses to cook for the president [Pohamba]. I could see he was angry and disappointed.
The Nigerian delegation, which arrived on Sunday morning, had packed up and left by lunchtime.
William Bulwane, ANC spokesperson for the Free State retorted:
Although we have not yet received any official complaints from heads of state we are going to be following this up with the estate.
Official ANC spokesperson, Jackson Mthembu, was also unaware of any complaints, but said President Zuma would apologise in person.
