South Africa’s Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has reported that approximately 39 people were killed on South Africa’s roads between December 1 – 31, 2011, a total of 1232 fatalities in 1027 crashes countrywide.
Late last year, 2oceansVibe reported that traffic authorities were escalating road safety measures in several areas, including screening actual footage of road accidents to alert motorists to the need for road safety. Security measures on major traffic routes around the country were also tightened prior to the festive season.
On the December period, the RTMC reported:
“Reports received from traffic monitors around the country suggest greater compliance from most motorists. Traffic authorities will deal harshly with those who are a source of danger to themselves and others.”
The need for vigilance is far from over, as the coming weekend promises another spike in national road traffic as holidaymakers return home prior to schools opening next week. The RTMC urges motorists to remain alert and vigilant, and co-operate with road authorities if required to do so.
