Well, well. Cosatu has announced that it would like the ANC to remove the current system of provinces in South Africa, saying that it is an obstacle to job creation. The organisation has said that it will lobby this at the ANC’s policy conference next year. Really, Cosatu? That can’t be the only reason…
In what is at best a thinly disguised political move for national domination, Cosatu seems to be unaware of the Constitution of South Africa, which expressly provides for governance on a national, provincial and municipal level. Should their policy come to fruition, it will essentially mean that the entire country would be under the governance of the ruling party. Seeing as the ruling party is doing so well nationally, with provinces having to be put under the administration of national government, this next step seems perfectly logical. Oh wait. It really doesn’t.
This would also mean that healthy political opposition would be removed from provinces. Seeing as the Western Cape has been doing pretty well lately under the governance of such opposition, this would most likely mean a decline in services and service delivery for Capetonians.
Cosatu chairperson Zwelinzima Vavi has stated that “[t]hose who will oppose the policy proposal are mosquitos and flies that needed to be doomed out of the alliance,” he told a media conference in Johannesburg, referring to the organisation’s close ties to the ANC.
Cosatu will form part of all the ANC’s centenary celebrations next month.
