Acting President Motlanthe granted the request yesterday
The 27th day of December 2011 is a public holiday throughout the Republic in terms of section 2A of the Public Holidays Act.
So said Government spokesman Thabo Masebe in a statement yesterday, after President Zuma was petitioned by the Federation of Unions in South Africa (FEDUSA) to make 27 December a public holiday, because Christmas Day (also a public holiday) falls on a Sunday this year, and the Day of Goodwill on a Monday.
FEDUSA sent the petition letter late last month, and in a surprising outbreak of governmental efficiency, given the giant global environment conference taking all government’s attention the first two weeks of December, it was granted yesterday.
So there you have it folks, 27 December is a public holiday this year.
Shops will probably still be open though, so don’t panic.
