In what is apparently a relatively regular occurrence in India, dozens of people have consumed toxic alcohol, leaving 102 dead and countless others in hospital.
The first cases were reported on Wednesday, when 16 people perished, and another 32 overnight. The cases emerged from India’s West Bengal state,
Residents of 12 villages in Sangrampur, Magrahat, Usthi and Mandirbazar areas in South 24 Parganas fell ill after drinking the alcohol on Wednesday evening. Four people have been arrested.
The slew of deaths came only a week after the state of Gujarat ushered in new legislation which outlawed the manufacture and sale of toxic alcohol, punishable by death.
Known locally as desi daroo, Indian moonshine is very cheaply available, as is usually spiked with methyl alcohol and industrial spirits, which have some obvious ill effects including fits, vomiting and death.
