The sirens go off, the lights flash, you blink in disbelief as you try to comprehend what has just happened – you’ve won the slots jackpot at a casino! Your mental shopping list is already on its third page when an elegantly dressed gentleman taps you on the shoulder to inform you it was a system glitch.
That is exactly what happened to Behar Merlaku when he tried his luck on the slot machines at a casino in Bregenz, Austria. In March of this year, the 26-year old Swiss citizen was playing on one-arm bandits when he hit the jackpot, or at least thought he had,
The jackpot came up loud and clear. There was music and the sum I had won – nearly 43 million euros – was displayed on a screen. I was so overjoyed and in my head I began calculating what I could do with all this money.
Although the jackpot alarms went off, the machine told a different story as only four out of the five symbols were matching. Due to the discrepancy, the casino deemed the win void, and instead offered him a free meal and £60.
It goes without saying that Merlaku was less than happy and rejected the measly compensation and took legal action. A lawsuit will launch in Austria next month and looks to be the biggest civil action claim of its kind anywhere in the world. Merlaku will argue that despite what was displayed, the machine still signaled that he had won the jackpot and therefore he is entitled to the winnings
