Not suitable for sensitive viewers
This year, the Western Cape Provincial Government is taking their road safety campaign to a new, chilling level. Yesterday Transport MEC, Robin Carlisle, launched ‘Crash Witness’, a series of road safety ads that will feature footage from actual road accidents, including footage of motorists being “killed or very badly injured”.
With the holiday season upon us, South Africa once again faces grim road accident and mortality statistics as people take to the highways and byways to go on holiday. Though the respective Provincial and National authorities have bombarded us with campaign after campaign to keep us alert and alive on the roads, the national statistics for road death are still shocking. Over 10 800 road fatalities were recorded during 2009 alone.
The use of the footage is apparently supported by the families of those who died in the accidents shown, and will be presented with appropriate warnings to children and sensitive viewers.
Says Carlisle:
This footage brings home to the motorist, passenger and pedestrian the very real dangers that exist on our roads and has a profound effect on those who view it.
