Locally, 30 Seconds is a popular board-game enjoyed by all ages and can often be the kickstart of a festive evening. In Detroit however, it’s a game which takes place in school bathrooms, and has absolutely nothing do with general knowledge.
A disturbing game has emerged at Detroit’s Ludington Middle School, which pits one eighth grade girl in a fistfight against another in the school’s restrooms, while other students look-on, filming the fight and encouraging combatants. Fights are scheduled to take no longer than 30 seconds, hence the name, and it seems it’s a no-holds barred affair.
In what was not the first case of this savagery, Jasmine Crawley was brutally assaulted by another girl who has not yet been identified. She claims she was forced into the ordeal and was subsequently harassed for losing, and now faces further bullying for coming forward.
After learning about what had happened, her family immediately went to the school to lay a complaint but claim it was “brushed off”. Arletha Newby, Jasmine’s sister had this to say,
This happened during school at eight o’clock in the morning. Where was security, the staff, teachers? You do not notice that 15 of your kids are gone out of a classroom?
Jasmine was lucky to escape with only broken glasses and several scratches. However, this might not be the case for the next victim.
It’s a two way responsibility here. We’re not just pointing the finger because, again, I know my niece is not an angel here. I just want to make sure that the schools are involved and that they’re professional and that they’re diligent with handling situations like this,” said Felisia Newby, Jasmine’s aunt.
The family has also filed a formal complaint with the local Police Department in the hope that action will be taken and that future encounters can be avoided.
