A far right political group, the National Rebirth of Poland party, came under fire from gay rights activists in Poland on Wednesday. They’d gotten word about a little-known judgement that had been passed allowing the political group the use of a ridiculous logo.
News emerged that a judge had allowed the small party to register the homophobic symbol in a little noticed decision at the end of October.
The symbol, depicted in the above photograph, and which speaks for itself, provoked horror among gay rights campaigners in the country.
Robert Biedron, a top campaigner and newly-elected lawmaker from the left-wing opposition, who also happens to be Poland’s first openly-gay MP:
Such symbols tap directly into fascist, neo-facist and xenophobic traditions, and intolerance.
The judge’s decision actually allowed the NOP to register two symbols: the logo, and the Celtic cross, which has been used by far-right movements internationally.
The AFP reported that opinion polls in Poland indicate that the Polish public seem to be disheartened with gay and lesbian people: 80 per cent of Poles oppose gay marriage, and 93 per cent believe gay and lesbian couples should not have the right to adopt children.
