Conan O’Brien Presides Over Late Night Television’s First Gay Marriage

Conan O'Brien returned to New York last week for the first time since his falling out with the NBC - not only to rub his recent success in his former employers' collective faces, but also to preside over the first same-sex marriage performed on late-night television. Because I guess that's worth making a big deal over.

Conan O’Brien returned to New York last week for the first time since his  falling out with the NBC – not only to rub his recent success in his former employers’ collective faces, but also to preside over the first same-sex marriage performed on late-night television. Because I guess that’s worth making a big deal over.

The filming stint was a week-long affair, marking the first-year anniversary of Conan’s late-night talk show – Conan. There were a couple of guest stars and East Coast shenanigans, but the high point of the tour was the on-air wedding of Conan’s costume designer, Scott Cronick, and his partner David Gorshein, taking advantage of New York state’s recent legalization of same-sex marriage.

So I mean I guess the nice thing here would be to choose not to be cynical about this – to take O’Brien at his word when, at  New York’s Beacon Theater where the wedding was conducted, he said,

This is for real. We are gathered here today in this beautiful place to witness the joining of two lives.

Because the implications of this just being a big ol’ media attention grab (the Pulitzer’s in the mail, after all) taking advantage of New York’s legalization of same-sex marriage, that would be a little ugly.
