The 2011 edition of the SA Rugby Awards will be held tomorrow night and one of the most hotly contested categories this year is Team of the Year. Among the nominees are newly crowned Currie Cup champions the Golden Lions, and UCT’s highly successful Ikey Tigers. The Stormers’ nomination adds to a strong Western Cape interest factor.
The Golden Lions, who won the domestic competition for the first time in 12 years on Saturday, have demonstrated impressive team cohesion this year. UCT’s Ikey Tigers are also very much in the running, having taken both their first Varsity Cup winners’ title and their first Western Province Super A league title since 1974 during the 2011 season.
Currie Cup first division winners Boland Cavaliers, who won the final 43-12 against EP Kings, and the Springbok Sevens team, which claimed titles in Las Vegas, London and Edinburgh this year are also in the mix. The Stormers, who notched up a Super Rugby semi-final in 2011, round out the nominees.
The ceremony at Gold Reef City will be broadcast live tomorrow night on Supersport from 7:30pm.
