With more South Africans refusing to be counted, our friends at Stats SA have begun resorting to, well, mildly extreme measures. Their application, which was submitted to the courts, requests permission to enforce the provisions of the Statistics Act. Basically, if you don’t comply they can throw your naughty ass in jail for 6 months or slap you with a R10 000 fine.
The census runs from October 10 to 31 and citizens are required to answer all questions put to them. If you’d like to know what exactly those questions are (an educated guess says one of them involves your income bracket), so you can crib, feel free to call the Department of Home Affairs, Jacob, Malema, Winnie or any other member of the mafia. Surely they’ll know something.
The all merciful Stats SA would not reveal how many people were refusing to comply but said warning letters would first be sent to people, informing them of the process and telling them what would happen if they don’t comply. Furthermore, legal action would only be taken after the census was completed.
According to Stats, the residents of Moutse in Limpopo refused to co-operate with census officials, because they were unhappy that local people were not used as enumerators, but officials say the issue has been resolved.
I’ll bet it was resolved, everyone knows that Census violators are highly sought after in Pollsmoor.
What a joke.
