The Libyan Prime Minister has officially confirmed Gaddafi is dead. Rebel forces have been surrounding Muammar Gaddafi’s hometown of Sirte for weeks, and according to reports, they finally have their man. National Transitional Council official, Abdel Majid Mlegta, told Reuters that Gaddafi was wounded in both legs during a firefight at dawn on Thursday, but was again attacked by Nato warplanes when he attempted to flee, later dying of his wounds.
The image above reportedly shows a bloodied Gaddafi sometime after the attacks, however, it remains unconfirmed as to whether it is Gaddafi or not.
There are conflicting reports about the exact nature of his death, but Mlegta claimed that Gaddafi was “also hit in his head,” and that “there was a lot of firing against his group and he died.” He also said, “we have the footage but it is not available now.”
Crowds are already gathering in the streets of Benghazi and Tripoli to start celebrating the reports of Gaddafi’s death, firing weapons into the air and singing.
The head of Gaddafi’s armed forces, Abu Bakr Younus Jabr, was also killed during the attempted capture of the former Libyan leader.
News agencies like Al Jazeera and Sky initially reported that the dictator had been captured alive, but most have since begun reporting that Gaddafi has in fact died of his wounds.
In typical Gaddafi style, rebels claimed he brandished a golden pistol when he was found.
