Microsoft’s Fancy New Touch-Screen Projectors [VIDEO]

The nice thing about initiatives like Microsoft Research is that you get to have an early gander at the things that you’re going to be spending stupid amounts of money on next year. Like the OmniTouch, for instance, which projects “touchscreen” interfaces onto pretty much whatever surface you want – desk, paper, or the back of your hand.

This particular bit of freshly-unveiled tech was put together by PhD student Chris Harrison. It’s not the first of it’s kind. In terms of being able to project touch-screen interfaces, but it’s the first to be able to function on hairy and uneven surfaces, using a short-range depth camera. Which is exciting, because it means the system is becoming pretty practical – and will be seeing commercial deployment pretty soon.

I mean look, don’t get me wrong – being able to talk to your phone is neat and stuff, but this looks cooler.
