A guy from California is suing the Warner Bros. for copyright infringement, misappropriation of his publicity rights, and defamation, claiming that The Hangover II was based on a script he wrote about his own adventures in Asia. Which is crazy, because I thought The Hangover II was just The Hangover, but in Thailand.
The man in question – one Michael Alan Rubin – got married in Japan in 2007 to a Japanese woman, after which the couple honeymooned in Thailand and India. What this has to do with three bros hanging out with a monkey is beyond me, but hey.
Says AVC:
According to the lawsuit, Rubin crafted a script in 2007 titled Mickey And Kirin, about the time he married a Japanese woman, then spent a tense honeymoon in Thailand and India where they bickered over money, and his bride refused to share a hotel room with him. Rubin claims he wrote his script after meeting a Bollywood producer who allegedly gave him the lead in several of his films, then dropped it off with the Writers Guild. He was then surprised to learn from “a Hollywood friend” that someone else had made a movie about “some Asian misadventures by Americans on the road to a wedding.
Which is great, because there’s pretty much no chance that this is getting to court, and now everybody knows Rubin as that guy who tried to sue Warner Bros. and also had to sleep in separate hotel room from his bride on his honeymoon.
But it’s nice to see that people still remember The Hangover II.
