After 26 bombs – including six mortar bombs and two submarine depth charges – washed up on Kent’s nudist colony at Leysdown Beach, the Royal Navy was called in to perform a two-day bomb sweep, uncovering another 61 explosives, some dating back to the late 19th century. Miraculously, no uncomfortable puns about nudity and bombs were involved.
The nude side of the beach is called ‘Shellness,’ and has a profile on the UK’s Naturist Factfile. No, I did not know that that was a thing until now either. Apparently, though, Shellness is an:
official naturist beach, located near Leysdown-on-Sea at the eastern end of the Isle of Sheppey on the north Kent coast. This beach is a mixture of sand, shingle, shells and, in places mud.
…
Recent reports suggest regular use by 20-30 naturists, with up to 100 at busy weekends.
Unfortunately the nude beach has since been cordoned off for the Royal Navy to go looking for more antique explosives, so Kent’s 20-30 naturists are going to need to find somewhere with less 19th-century bombs to hang out at.
