Brookfield Properties, owners of the Zuccotti Park at the OWS protestors are demonstrating in, had called up the NYPD for “ assistance during their cleaning operation”. There were concerns that this would bring the protest to an abrupt end. This was prevented by a last minute statement from Deputy May Holloway, insisting that the “cleaning” operation be postponed.
Holloway’s statement has been taken as a win by the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators, who organized a “peaceful victory march” up to Wall Street to celebrate. Although several were arrested along the way, for reasons that are unclear. The protesters seem to be getting used to that kind of thing.
Holloway’s statement continues:
Brookfield believes they can work out an arrangement with the protesters that will ensure the park remains clean, safe, available for public use and that the situation is respectful of residents and businesses downtown, and we will continue to monitor the situation.
Mayor Bloomberg did say that the park’s owners could still move forward with the cleaning project – which would forcibly displace the majority of the protesters – in a couple of days, albeit without the NYPD’s pepper-spray-happy assistance.
Have a great, occupational weekend.
