You might have seen this face around your Facebook profile the past few weeks, as both police and the South African Facebook community tried to locate “Thomas Bester”, who was sought by police in connection with multiple counts of theft, assault, rape, and at least one murder, following the death of a Cape Town model last month.
Bester (real name Thabo) would allegedly use his Facebook profile to befriend women he met out in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, sending them mails, offering them modelling jobs and arranging future meetings. He lured one woman to a fake photo shoot, before robbing and raping her, while another was lured to a guest house in Durban where the same happened.
Captured last week, Bester is in court this week in Durban, and has pleaded guilty to both counts of rape. In his defense, he claims he had only sought to rob the victims, but his “lust” overwhelmed him and he raped both of them in separate occasions. He has not as yet been charged with the murder of the Cape Town model. The trial continues as police investigate further charges against him.
