News of Steve Jobs’ death resonated around the world this morning. A sad day for many, but Steve’s death has put tremendous momentum behind the move to have 14 October named as “Steve Jobs Day”.
“We admire his work. We’ve embraced his vision. And we love what he’s brought to the world.” So declares stevejobsday2011.com, setting aside 14 October to the man who gave us the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad.
The initiative, which is the brainchild of US marketing firm, Studiocom, aims to “honour the man himself and say thank you”. And how do we do this? By wearing a black turtleneck and tweeting about him, of course. True fanboys are encouraged to go full tilt by not only wearing the turtleneck, but also Steve’s trademark blue jeans and running shoes.
The idea was started a few weeks ago, but with the news breaking this morning, it has gained quite a bit of momentum. What was previously seen by many as a little creepy and weird has now spiraled into a movement in remembrance of the iconic CEO. Why October 14? Originally, this date was chosen to coincide with the shipment and launch of the new iPhone 4S (the “S” – in my world at least – now standing for “Steve”), but has now taken on a slightly arbitrary nature.
So get your turtleneck ready and pressed, and remember the 14th. Think different.
