From the Brazilian super model to Crocs, everything eventually has its time in the sun. That rule applies fully to health food. For hundreds of years African people have been consuming things like hoodia and rooibos – but no-one thought of investing in a marketing strategy for either of those until pretty recently. The “newest” African health brand has been growing on some really old trees for a really long time. It’s Baobab fruit. And it’s set to give that darling of the health food industry – the acai berry – some stiff competition.
Touted as the next big super food, Baobab fruit has very high antioxidant levels. It’s currently being marketed in the form of healthy fruit cubes in the US, which have an “exotic, tangy flavor described as a cross between grapefruit, pear and vanilla”. With its low sugar content and low GI rating, high levels of iron, potassium and magnesium and its ability to dehydrate naturally, facilitating preservation, Baobab fruit reportedly has just about everything going for it.
It’s the new Brazilian super model of health food, from a really cool, but wrinkly old tree.
