A DA councillor has reported 5fm morning DJ Gareth Cliff to the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA). The councillor, Tex Collins, was outraged at a sexist comment which he claims Gareth made to a female interviewee on air.
While speaking to 27-year-old Aids activist, Angela Larkan, Gareth applauded her for her humanitarian work – which she began at the age of 22 – with the quip that “girls of 22 usually do nothing but lie on their backs with their legs open”.
Appalled, Tex apparently states in his complaint that Cliff ‘s remark “sends out the message that every young girl is nothing but a prostitute and a whore”. Not sure if that’s exactly what Gareth meant, but if he did ‘compliment’ Angela like that, it would not have ticked the PC box.
The BCCSA is investigating the complaint, and Cliff’s manager, Rina Broomberg, has denied that he said anything of the sort. Meanwhile, Larkan has confirmed that Gareth made the comment at the start of the interview, saying that it did “throw me a bit” but that she had ignored it and continued the interview.
This controversy follows the he-said-she-said Darren Scott media drama of last week.
