Celebrated American documentary photographer James Nachtwey happened to be in New York on 11 September 2001. The images Nachtwey captured on that fateful day were published by TIME immediately following 9/11, and have become iconic. As the ten year anniversary of the Twin Towers tragedy looms, a number of previously unpublished photos by Nachtwey have just been released.
A decade later, one imagines that the visual impact of these photos, together with images by other photographers, such as Thomas Hoepker, must still strike a deep chord with New Yorkers who witnessed the horror of 9/11.
