In other meat-related news today, animal lovers may be pleased to know that China seems to be losing its taste for dog meat. Stats show that more people than ever before now keep dogs as domestic pets in China. While dog meat is certainly still on the menu there, the way dogs are viewed generally is undergoing a major shift across the country.
The city of Shenzhen, in particular, is experiencing a change in attitude. Dog meat has always been very commonly eaten in Shenzhen, but increasingly owning a dog is actually becoming a status symbol for those with higher incomes.
There are now more than 120,000 dogs kept as pets in Shenzhen, and it’s reported that this number is dramatically on the rise. Some other cities, including Shanghai and Beijing are trying to curb the increase in dog ownership by enforcing a one dog limit.
