In what must have seemed like a scene straight from a movie, hundreds of Orthodox Greek mourners were mistakenly served kourabiedes, a traditional Greek biscuit, at a funeral reception. Shortly after tasting the biscuits, the guests started acting incredibly strangely and the funeral bureau officers called the police.
Authorities and funeral goers were surprised to find out that instead of icing sugar, the biscuits had cocaine toppings sprinkled all over them.
According to a witness who complained to the funeral home, crazy scenes unfolded during the ceremony:
The elderly bystanders, instead of mourning, began to dance around the dead, and the tears turned to nervous laughter. The cognac was consumed in shots accompanied by the sound of happy toasts, and there were some who started ordering mojito cocktails.
The climax came at the time of transporting the body to the burial site, where the two elder brothers of the deceased raced along the procession, with their wives whistling and shouting encouraging slogans.
Greek authorities quickly traced the biscuits back to the bakery from which they came and established that one of the workers in the confectionary, a Bulgarian national, is a member of an organised criminal group dealing with drug trafficking and distribution.
Basically, the Bulgarian came up with an interesting way of smuggling the drug – he’d been sprinkling it atop the biscuits.
However, he made a stupid mistake and confused the orders that were meant to go to the funeral reception with the ones that had been pre-ordered by another entrepreneurial person.
So far, police officers in Athens have arrested several other members of the group and confiscated more than 60 kilograms of cocaine.
