We live in a progressive city here in Cape Town – we like to think out of the box. And that’s just what Kristin van der Hoven has done by launching Proud Hounds Doggie Daycare in the city. Sick of leaving your precious pup at home while you’re at work? Then bring it to Kristin and the crew for the day.

Kristin is actually a qualified cordon bleu chef, so expect your best friend to eat like a champion, but she also has about six years worth of dog training and behaviourist experience too, so she also knows what she’s doing.

After running her own dog training school for a couple of years, she has finally been able to realise her dream and open the doggie daycare centre around the corner from Wembley Square in Gardens.

Run as a full day programme, dogs will participate in games like tunnel running and listen to classical music when they have naptime after lunch.

They’ll be walked for you and they will probably also visit the doggie salon for a little bit of tender loving care.

It’s Kristin’s vision that a fun and healthy environment for your dog will lead to a happier home life for you both. Because dogs are such active animals, being left at home alone during the day can lead to problems such as separation anxiety, excessive barking and destructive behaviour.

That’s where Kristin and her team of experts step in and occupy your best friends time so that he or she doesn’t even get the chance to think of that sort of stuff.

Of course Kristin will offer some other peripheral services like dog training and puppy classes for the unruly. She is also looking at adding what she calls the “canine cab”- essentially a pick-up-and-drop-off service so you don’t have to worry about transport.

Naturally she will also be incorporating an onsite shop that will offer a wide range of dog products including specialised food and the usual toys and grooming products.
