Two Israeli scientists say they have developed a sensor that can accurately detect date-rape drugs in drinks 100 percent of the time – a tiny, drink-stirrer-looking device that, when dipped into your appletini or other refreshing beverage, can detect the presence of dissolved drugs. Nice job, science.
Professor Fernando Patolsky and Doctor Michael Ioffe of Tel Aviv University tested the solution out on a range of cocktails and soft drinks, proving completely accurate in detecting GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid) and ketamine, the two most commonly-used date rape drugs.
The sensor, normally clear, grows cloudy when inserted into a drink with either of these drugs present.
Patolsky and Ioffe are working to expand the device’s detection range to include Rohypnol, another commonly used date rape drug.
