Lionsgate Films has announced plans to re-make everybody’s moms’ favourite film, 1987 classic Dirty Dancing. Kenny Ortega, the head choreographer on the original, is set to take the director’s chair this time. Sadly, Patrick Swayze is no longer with us, and Jennifer Grey is no baby any longer, so the key question on everyone’s dance card is: who will take the roles of Johnny Castle and Baby Houseman? The second biggest question is, will Hollywood ever stop its rampage through the classic film archive, reanimating and rebooting at will in the name of nostalgia and box office greenbacks? Third, is it going to be in 3D?
There’s no trailer yet, and practically no publicity material other than the announcement from Lionsgate. So, until the roles are cast and the marketing deluge begins, strap in your earbuds, toggle to that soundtrack I know you have buried somewhere on your iPod (guilty!), and let Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes remind you why the original will very likely stay the best.
