A 31-year-old Swedish man, known only as ‘Richard’, was attempting to build a nuclear reactor in his kitchen and was arrested and had his experiment shut down after he contacted the Swedish Radiation Authority (Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten) to ask whether or not his pet project was legal.
Richard had been blogging about the project for about six months, and spent around 6 000 Kronor (6 399 ZAR) on materials needed to build the reactor before checking to make sure what he was doing was okay with johnny law.
Still, Swedes are a genteel folk, and ‘Richard’ was released shortly after his arrest, once it became apparent that he hadn’t planned on doing anything more than split a couple of atoms. He told the local paper:
To get it to generate electricity you would need a turbine and a generator and that is very difficult to build yourself.
Swedish nerd doesn’t give entire suburb cancer.
