An Iranian woman who was blinded by a man who threw acid in her face seven years ago prevented the Iranian government from literally taking “an eye for and eye”.
The Iranians do love their kooky sentences. You really don’t want to be committing crimes over there. They will come up with some very creative ways of making you see the error of your ways. So when Majid Mohahedi had the idea of throwing acid on Ameneh Bahrami’s face, he really should have thought more carefully.
Bahrami was left blind and her face disfigured after the acid attack, so the sentence of administering acid to the eyes of her attacker was the natural course of action. But Bahrami felt that the man should be spared
She told CNN:
I never intended to allow Majid to be blinded…each of us, individually, must try and treat others with respect and kindness in order to have a better society.
Bahrami managed to stop the blinding procedure minutes before it was to be carried out by a physician under legal supervision.
Majid was convicted in 2008 of pouring a bucket of acid over Bahrami, for rejecting his advances for two years. At the time she demanded that he suffer the same fate, but over time and through some guidance she’s decided he should be spared.
