The ANC Youth League has attacked the media for reporting on Julius Malema’s finances, claiming that it’s all a big conspiracy against him and that the media is “funded” by the right-wing Afrikaaner group “Die Broederbond”.
I love the ANC Youth League’s press conferences. Here we have a serious media contingent at a news conference, called by the Youth League, simply so that they can tell the media to report that it is being funded by Afrikaaner extremists.
Back to the story at hand. The ANCYL says that the saga surrounding Malema’s finances is simply a cunning ruse by the media to divert attention away from the ANCYL’s policies of nationalisation. And it is not about the allegations brought forward, suggesting that Malema is a big fat criminal who belongs in a two by two cell, with his new wife, “Bubba”.
Speaking at the press conference the ANC Youth League secretary general, Sindiso Magaqa said:
The ANCYL is fully aware that all these allegations are an attempt to divert our attention from the issues we are raising, particularly on nationalisation of mines and expropriation of land without compensation.
These are issues we will continue to raise without fear or favour and we will never retreat because victory is certain.
Treasurer general, Pule Mabe and Magaga then went on a rant about the media and its “white right-wing” bosses.
According to the leagues’ deputy president, Ronald Lamola, the media has an agenda:
This is the Broederbond that we are speaking about, that it is still there.
Why [is] only the life of a young, black South African, the president of the youth league, an issue of interest?
You are being controlled, you are playing political dirty tricks and we know that some of you, not all of you — are being funded.
