Tokyo Sexwale made it fairly clear yesterday that the Julius Malema notion of land redistribution is not what he has in mind for South Africa, as Human Settlements Minister. Oh, and he also called Julius a loud-mouth.
The ANCYL leader has long been calling for the redistribution of land – and for this to be done by force and without compensation, if necessary. During his speech at the Vision 2030 youth summit in Durban, Tokyo addressed this argument by saying, “It makes sense for Malema to say we need to distribute land, but I hope this loud-mouth young man is not talking about a situation where land is lying unused and someone is just happy to boast about it”.
He went on to say that land distribution did not mean a “scenario in which a man would stand tall and point to vacant land and say this is my land from here to there”.
Sexwale said that government’s current approach of building houses for the poorest of the poor was the “best strategy of land redistribution through human settlement and at the same time accelerating housing opportunities”.
“When we build a house we bring along bulk infrastucture as well and we give people plots because when you own a house, you own a plot and that is land redistribution.”
I can’t wait for Julius to respond.
