Earlier this morning, 2oceansVibe reported in morning spice headlines that James Murdoch was accused of misleading British parliament about his knowledge of phone hacking at the News of the World. Two former key players at the paper issued a statement contradicting one of Murdoch’s key claims. Now Cameron wants answers. Real ones.
Colin Myler, the former editor, and Tom Crone, a former top lawyer for the paper, issued a statement on Thursday contradicting one of Murdoch’s key claims in his testimony before Parliament on Tuesday.
According to an article in the Daily Mail this afternoon:
David Cameron today said James Murdoch had “questions to answer” in Parliament after his evidence on phone hacking was challenged.
The Prime Minister spoke after claims that Mr Murdoch knew three years ago that phone hacking at the News of the World was not confined to a single “rogue” reporter were referred to the police.
Labour MP Tom Watson said he was contacting Scotland Yard after two former senior executives at the paper publicly challenged Mr Murdoch’s evidence to the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee earlier this week.
This new scandal hangs on the premise that James was unaware of an email suggesting hacking at the paper was more widespread when he agreed a reported £700 000 out-of-court settlement with Gordon Taylor, the chief executive of the Professional Footballers’ Association, in 2008.
This, Myler and Crone say, is simply not true and that in essence, the settlement was a kind of bribe to keep Taylor quiet about how malicious the hacking was getting.
Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee chairman, John Whittingdale, said last night that Mr Murdoch had already agreed to write to the committee on various points he had been unable to immediately address at the hearing, and will surely address the new claims too.
James has a week to respond otherwise he may find himself in more trouble.
