Earlier today, in the Morning Spice headlines, 2oceansvibe reported that Shrien Dewani was excused from his extradition hearing, that resumed yesterday, because he was “too ill” to attend court proceedings. It’s since emerged that Shrien “exercises for hours” despite being diagnosed with a condition which leaves sufferers struggling physically and mentally.
Even though Dewani’s lawyer, Clare Montgomery QC, argued that it was “positively inhumane” to keep such an ill man in the courtroom, it appears our man does his fair share of exercise at the psychiatric hospital where he is being detained.
During the hearing yesterday it emerged that staff at the hospital have spotted him using a skipping rope and doing push-ups and sit-ups.
Details of Dewani’s reported active lifestyle emerged during the hearing taking place at Belmarsh Magistrates’ Court in East London.
Dewani has already been diagnosed with psychomotor retardation, a condition which leaves the individual suffering a “reduction of physical movements,” including a “visible slowing of physical and emotional reactions.”
The court then heard that staff confiscated the skipping rope after watching him exercise with it in a walled garden.
Reading from a medical report, Hugo Keith QC, representing the South African authorities, told the court how Dewani regularly carried out vigorous exercises for up to two hours at a time at the clinic.
He also mentioned that Dewani would work out on the multi-gym at the family home during his twice-weekly supervised visits.
Maybe Shrien is bulking up a little before what should ultimately be the inevitable outcome of the hearing. He was promised his own cell after all so there’s not too much to worry about.
