Research In Motion (Rim), the makers of BlackBerry, has been severely criticized for having two CEOs, but apparently there’s really only one man who wears the pants in the ever-deteriorating domestic situation that is the Rim boardroom: Mike Lazaridis.
“Boy Genius Report” interviewed numerous ex members of staff and executives and published a report that paints a pretty ugly picture of the goings-on in the offices of Rim.
According to the report the two co-founders used to argue over just about everything and could often be heard berating each other, in what have been called “titanic arguments”.
But Lazaridis almost always comes out on top, because he has the better technical knowledge. But this doesn’t mean he’s helping the situation at all. He seems to think like an engineer, not a marketer. For instance, he’s been far more worried about trivialities like battery life and network performance, but has been blind to the potential the smartphone market has to offer. In executive meetings he used to brag that their phones would never have Mp3 players, nor would they have such nonsense as a camera.
No one gives a toss about network performance when your phone’s got a multitouch screen and gives you access to an app store with 300 000 apps to download. And who cares that your iPhone’s battery only lasts ten minutes, it’s made of 100% pure win.
Apparently Mike is also getting paranoid. He’s been spotted with serious bodyguards shadowing him and has stormed out of a taped interview when someone dared to question him on BlackBerry’s security issues.
I know various people who still think BlackBerry is cool and that it’s the pinnacle of awesome because it’s got BlackBerry messenger and they get to hand their BBM pin out to everyone on Facebook. To these people I have one thing to say, “WhatsApp yo!”
