Matt Goss was the lead singer and one of the twin brothers who made up the band Bros. I was 11 years old when the 1988 hit “I Owe You Nothing” dominated the top of the charts and although I was still learning about what was and wasn’t ‘cool,’ I was sure as shit that these guys were cool. I can’t remember ever wanting to be someone as much as I wanted to be Matt Goss. His peroxided hair, studs in the jacket and crucifix earrings were about as much as my brain could handle. And his skin… my God, his skin was perfect.
Apart from your favourite current rock, pop and indie tunes, 2oceansvibe Radio is not shy of tunes from the 50s, 60s, 70s and indeed the 80s (and of course the 90s). That said, “I Owe You Nothing” does play from time to time on South Africa’s #1 online radio station (download the app for our iPhone/Blackberry here). So 2ov Radio happened to play that very song in my car on the way to breakfast at Caprice on Sunday morning (my MINI Countryman has built-in internet Radio in the dashboard via the MINI ‘Connected’ system), where I met with my G-Man.
I took a flyer and asked G if he recalled Matt Goss being a little bit naughty in the song “I Owe You Nothing” in terms of the growl that he gives now and then when he sings. G-Man knew exactly what I was talking about.
And so will you when you check this out. It’s an unbelievable growl he gives repeatedly. Something which seemed awesome back then but, in hindsight, was possibly a bit naughty?
He pumps out the first one at the 0:24 mark, then a few little ones, with another biggie at the 0:38 mark – just before the chick slaps him and he bolts. He chills for a while, but then the growls come back at the 1:03 mark.
Pretty wild, huh?
