I was checking out the Name Your Hood website this weekend and must say, the 200+ names that have already been put forward for the the first two neighbourhoods in the project (Hood 1: the area above Saigon on Kloof Street & Hood 2: the area around Heritage Square between Buitensingle and Strand) are just brilliant.

Whilst there is a judging panel that will help create a shortlist before the final vote; the names with the most support during the naming process (ends on Thursday) will form part of the shortlist. That said, it looks like ‘Saints’ and ‘Abokloop’ are a shoo-in for Hood 2’s final shortlist.
Every name submitted needs motivation, explaining where the name came from. So I was checking out the name ‘Saints’ and the person that submitted it says, “St.Stephens church is at its centre, situated on Heritage square. It was built in 1899 as the African theatre, and holds much history.” Very Clever. The motivation for ‘Abokloop’ is “The area Between Bo-Kaap and Loop.”
Very clever. Can you think of better names for the first two neighbourhoods? Show your support by putting a name forward for the new Cape Town neighbourhood names. You are able to virtually stroll around each neighbourhood, read up on each neighbourhoods history and check out the community involved in each area. It’s exciting, positive stuff.
