Pro-whaling representatives from Japan, Iceland and some African and Caribbean nations, upped and left the room yesterday at a gathering of the International Whaling Commission. The topic they were touchy about was a proposal to create a sanctuary for whales in the South Atlantic. Guess walking out was a simple way to ensure the vote could not proceed?
Whaling nations have resisted attempts to designate a sanctuary in the Atlantic Ocean south of the equator, even though not many whales are even caught there.
The highly controversial activity of commercial whale hunting has been banned since the 1980s, but exceptions to the law allow certain nations, such as Japan and Norway, to continue whaling. Japan says it does it for ‘research purposes’ although whaling protesters point out that an alarming amount of whale meat ends up on the menu in Japanese restaurants.
