“Taliban: ‘On each floor of the hotel, our fighters have broken down the door to each room, taking out guests and killing  them.”’ This was one of the  traumatic tweets circulating on Twitter last night, as Taliban militants stormed the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul, killing 21 people.

In her tweet,  Afghanistan-based Wall Street Journal writer Maria Abi-Habib (@Abihab) does a terrifying but effective job of encapsulating the mind-numbing horror of the event.  An argument for the massive value of real time reporting via social media.

The assault involved suicide bombers and Taliban insurgents entering the hotel in the early hours of the morning, Kabul time. A battle with Nato forces ensued, during which all of the gunmen were killed and part of the hotel was left in flames.
