South Africa’s first ever reality television porn show appears to have gone limp halfway through the auditions because broadcasters are reluctant to ‘excite’ the public. Although South Africans are generally fans of reality television, it’s hardly surprising that the conservative forces have decided to pass on a deal to air the show.
A report in the Saturday Star newspaper has indicated that broadcasters have refused point-blank to even broadcast a soft core version of the show.
A spokeswoman and judge for the show, Dr Devine, expressed her disappointment at broadcasters refusing to take up the offer to cover the show, which aims to find the country’s next male and female porn stars:
It is unfortunate that a TV reality show will not take place at this stage as television stations are reluctant to ‘excite’ the public who are opposed to pornography.
She continued that this was rather obvious given the country’s general attitude toward the naked news.
This is, however, not the only hiccup that Porn Stars is facing. They may need to cancel the Cape Town and Durban auditions for the show, if sales of a DVD of the Gauteng auditions don’t do well.
Yes, you can actually buy a DVD of the live sex auditions that were held at the Lollipop Lounge in Jozi last month.
Dr Devine:
This is because if we have a poor response from the public there will not be the budget to continue Porn Stars and it will not make business sense to continue with auditions in other cities if they are not supported by the public.
Donovan van Wyngaard, an executive producer for the show, has already had a heart attack as a result of the stress.
Despite this, Devine remains optimistic about the sales of the DVD:
We had a great final audition in Joburg and everybody was extremely optimistic for the future of Porn Stars. I think we as South Africans can be proud to have thought of the concept before others and had the courage to dare go public with the Porn Star concept and we believe the public will be behind us and support us by purchasing the DVD.
Well, let’s just see how this one plays out then shall we.
