There is a lot of talk going on about the new ‘Name Your Hood‘ initiative, and as you may have noticed, 2oceansvibe is in full support. It is exactly what Cape Town needs to fully explore and celebrate the unique pockets of this great city. We’ve got the new transport system and fancy bridges, but for how long will we give directions according to how far someting is from the Engen garage in Gardens?
What Name Your Hood is doing, is allowing you, the public, the chance to name the various neighbourhoods in Cape Town – similar to what you might have seen or heard about in New York. They’ve got the likes of TriBeCa (Triangle Below Canal), SoHo (South Of Houston), The Bronx and the ‘Meat Packing District.”
We’ve got ‘Gardens’ which is great, and the name will always be there – but the top of Kloof Street falls into ‘Gardens,’ and so does the area where Mavericks strip club resides. It’s too broad. Shouldn’t those pockets (neighbourhoods) have their own distinct name? Something that gives a heightened sense of community?Of course they should. It can only help.
This is how they have divided it up:
See how they’ve chosen the end of Long Street to be a neighbourhood? Long street by its very definition and name is a very long street! The end is a unique node, full of restaurants and bars, completely different to the other end of Long Street. It needs a name. And you can help do that.
Check out this video, which explains it a little better – and then visit the Name Your Hood website for more info and a more detailed map.
Check out nameyourhood.co.za for more information. There is a FAQ section there to answer all your questions as well.
