It’s not clear exactly what Amy was on when she performed in Belgrade on Saturday night, but whatever it was, it was a lot. During her 90 minute performance, Winehouse managed to mumble mostly and may have even hallucinated a few times too. The next few legs of her European tour have obviously been cancelled.
Some 20 000 of Amy’s fans had assembled for the highly-promoted concert at Belgrade’s sixth-century Kalemegdan fortress on Saturday.
Belgrade and the world had given Amy yet another chance to show that she could indeed remain sober and deliver a performance reminiscent of the early part of her career.
After all, she had just come out of another stint in rehab and should have been OK for at least a few weeks.
Unfortunately, excitement turned to disappointment within the first moments that Amy walked, sorry, stumbled, out to perform.
It’s not really clear why her band or managers let her carry on performing in the state that she was in but maybe they wanted to teach her a lesson of sorts.
Concert goers didn’t take long to voice their disapproval either and some had even travelled from neighbouring countries to watch the concert.
Take Bojan Petrovic, a 35-year old teacher from the southern Serbian town Nis, for example:
I paid my weekly salary, 38 Euros for this concert and I knew of her troubles, but the organisers should have cancelled it to let us, her fans, remember the real Amy.
Videos hit YouTube pretty quickly as you’d imagine and Serbian media even described the concert as a “scandal” and a “disaster”. The Blic daily said the concert was “the worst in the history of Belgrade.”

Amy attempts to sing Addicted
Needless to say a statement was released late yesterday afternoon cancelling her appearances in Istanbul on Monday and in Athens on Wednesday. The Serbian concert had kicked off a 12-date European tour that now surely hangs in the balance.
Despite feeling sure that she wanted to fulfil these commitments, she has agreed with management that she cannot perform to the best of her ability and will return home.
I knew that I was going to cringe a little when I watched the videos, but Amy has made it very hard to come back from this.
