The preliminary 49-man squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup has been announced, including 21 players who are previous World Cup winners.
The list has been sent to the IRB as one of the requirements for the Rugby World Cup’s planning. It should be noted, however, that this squad is flexible and the final squad of 30 may include players from outside of this group.
Coach Peter De Villiers said:
I’m very happy with the squad. We have got a good blend of youth and experience as well as including some uncapped players who have forced their way into contention for selection with their performances in Super Rugby.
Our planning is at an advanced stage for the international season and the vast majority of these players have attended one or both of our planning camps.
Our Castle Tri-Nations squad will be drawn from this group once we have been able to sort out those players who are carrying injuries at the end of the Vodacom Super Rugby competition.
I don’t really know how to feel about the squad. On the one hand I’m happy for Dean Greyling, who’s been outstanding and I’m glad some of the overseas players also got a look in. But for the love of all things good and pure, how can they pick Ricky-bloody-Januarie and not Sarel Pretorious? Januarie is the only man who can play both scrumhalf and hooker. And who the hell thinks Elton Jantjies is good enough? This seems too much like race politics to me.
The final squad will be announced on 23 August.
