Athol Fugard
Another South African has scooped a Tony Award for 2011! Last month we told you about Cape Town’s Handspring Puppet Company winning a special award for their theatrical work, but it is Athol Fugard who deserves the standing ovation. The 78-year-old theatre maker, with over 30 plays under his belt, walked away last night with a lifetime achievement award. Respect.
To date, he has been nominated six times but has never won.
Fugard is best known for his fierce anti-apartheid activism and themes in his work. His most celebrated works include Master Harold… and the Boys, Boesman and Lena and The Road to Mecca. More recently, his novel Tsotsi was adapted for the screen and ended up winning an Oscar for best foreign language film in 2005.
South Africans, and this guy in particular, are just… Awesome.
