There’s a lot of that volcano business going down at the moment. Over 3,500 people have been evacuated from the area surrounding the Chilean volcano Puyehue, active for the first time in 50 years. Volcanic ash, stirred up by the activity, has spread across the border into Argentina, shutting down businesses and airports.
Activity increased rapidly on June 3, resulting in an alert level 4 (out of a possible 4) being issued, with the eruption proper beginning at around 20h00.
Chilean president, Sebastián Piñera, called back from his holiday in Italy by the eruption, said that “he would visit the area if it was necessary,” but that the “evacuation process has developed in complete normality, and luckily the frequency and intensity of the tremors has diminished”.
Which is all beside the point: here are some rad photos. Look at them.
