New Zealand police are investigating CCTV video footage from a Dunedin pub where the Lions rugby team celebrated their Super 15 win over the Highlanders on Saturday. An 18-year-old woman has claimed that she was sexually assaulted and that the incident involved a Lions player.
The woman, a student at the University of Otago, laid a complaint with police on Sunday morning, and it is still not clear which player has been identified as the culprit. She has apparently been advised not to talk publicly about the matter yet, and the New Zealand authorities have said little else to clear up the mystery.
Meanwhile the Lions are also investigating the matter further but have stated they know nothing of the incident.
One wonders if the definition of sexual assault is understood fully. It amounts to the unlawful and intentional sexual violation of a complainant without that person’s consent. It’s a serious crime, and a serious accusation. Hope it’s cleared up quickly.
